First Place: Title: “Strangled By Plastic” Artist: Heather Nagel
This fibre art sculpture, in my mind has won, because it is very strong in all four factors. It seems to me that the artist has used ingenuity, tenacity and radical innovation to successfully craft plastic into her felts. Not only do these fabrics work structurally, they are absolutely fascinating and beautiful to look at and interesting to the sense of touch. Concepts flow as freely as the fibres. What is strangled by plastic? Is it the vessel with its literal reference to plastic rope around it, or is it the oceans, which the fabric flowing out of the vessel may represent? Or of course, is the water, actually us? AND, do we have “plastic” components that strangle our bodies, or minds or our relationships? Is the vessel the universe that holds us, or is it specifically God? Or, it could be each of us – our beings or our “selves” that hold our minds and spirits. There are endless ways to interpret this thoughtful composition of concepts. This is extremely thought provoking.
The very nice aesthetics draw me in, draw an initial connection that is held by the intriguing possible meanings, interesting texture and feel, aesthetic nuances and wonderment of the superb technical execution. There is no bad craftsmanship that my attention gets caught on. And there seems to be incredible innovation with a process that boggles my mind to imagine!
What is extremely noteworthy of this piece is that the artist has managed to achieve complex conceptual art (Intellectual Meaning) while not sacrificing or omitting Beauty. That challenge is an enormous one and not often done well or even strived for in the first place. I tip my hat!
